Maíastra

Maíastra

Maíastra 1910-1912 Anonymous Photographer Negative silver gelatin on glass, 18 x 13 cm

Story

Between 1910 and 1944, Brancusi created 29 birds. The first Maïastra, 1910-12, refers to the tales of their country of origin (?) Maïastra is a fabulous bird which can be transformed and reunite separated lovers. This is an important moment in the work of Brancusi, which brings together the concept of unit and metamorphosis. The Maïastra, in its first version, is for Brancusi one of his first attempts to develop its space sculptures. Made of white marble, it is arranged on a series of bases. An initial block of stone is laid a caryatid representing a couple intertwined, which supports a block of stone which is laid the Maïastra. In this version, base and sculpture appear seamlessly integrated. There is no longer any hierarchy between the different parts. The pure form and ovoid chest of the bird, full of inspiration, is stretched to the sky.
